Justification
Northern
Minas Gerais is one of the poorest regions
of the country with a population of 2 millions in
habitants. Montes Claros is the main city
of the region with 300.000 in habitants. The Aroldo
Tourinho Hospital is a private non profit Institution,
with 140 beds, that treats approximately 130.000
patients each year.
Brazil’s
Maternal Infant Project, sponsored by the 3H Program
(Health, Hunger and Humanity) of the
Rotary Foundation, began in 1992 and has been completed
in 1996.
Strategy
The
Rotary Clubs from Montes Claros, associated
with the Rotary Club of Modesto, California, USA,
and the Rotary Club of Los Angeles, California,
received from the Rotary Foundation the approval
of the Project 3H-92-2 for funds in the amount
of US$ 257,000. Later the District 4570, from Rio
de Janeiro, through the Rotary Foun -dation, donated
more US$ 17,000.
Based
on these contributions, the local business
association and the rotarians initiated the campaign
" Help us give health ", in order to raise
community funds that would match those obtained
through the Rotary Foundation.
With
those resources it has been possible to expand the
facility and to buy more equipments for the Aroldo
Tourinho Hospital, using a total current investment
of US$3,5 million dollars.
The
facility has since grown in size from 1.700 square
meters to 7,500 square meters. The quality of medical
- Hospital services has greatly improved,
thereby benefitting more the regional population
that is the dependant on this hospital for their
medical care.
The
rotarians from Montes Claros and other towns from
this region, along with their wives, are closely
monitoring the progress of the project. The Human
Milk Bank has already registered 2.000 mothers
as donaters.
In
July,1998, the United Nation for Children Fund (UNICEF),
based on the good structure of the Aroldo Tourinho
Hospital for caring mothers and children, has distinguished
the institution with the title: "Hospital Friend
of the Child ".
Maintenance
Unfortunatelly,
the brazilian government does not provide adequate
budget for themaintenance of the Hospital that needs
ask for money from the community, in order to maintan
the health services. This way, the Rotary Clubs
of Montes Claros and the Aroldo Tourinho Hospital
are always looking for new partners that can join
some funds in benefitted of the poor people of this
region.
